On September 10, 2026, the public is invited to Crystal Point at Presque Isle State Park for a special celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the Oliver Hazard Perry Monument.
The monument was dedicated in 1926 to commemorate Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and the American victory at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Perry’s historic victory secured American control of Lake Erie and became an important turning point in the nation’s westward expansion. It also gave us two enduring symbols of American courage and determination: the battle flag bearing “Don’t Give Up the Ship” and Perry’s legendary report, “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
The 100th anniversary celebration is part of the America 250 and Pennsylvania 250 commemorations and will recognize the enduring legacy of Perry, his fleet, and the men who built and sailed the ships constructed along Erie’s shoreline in 1813.
The Grand 100-Year Rededication and Refurbishment of the Perry Monument will feature distinguished speakers, including Admiral Sam Cox of the Naval History and Heritage Command and Admiral Matt Kohler, an Erie native. Organizers are also hoping to include a military fly-by and a sail-by from the U.S. Brig Niagara.
The public is invited to attend. Because parking at Crystal Point is limited, shuttle service will be available from the Beach 11 parking lot. Lilly Broadcasting is also sponsoring the event and is expected to provide a livestream for those unable to attend in person.
Join us at Presque Isle State Park as we honor 100 years of the Perry Monument and celebrate the enduring legacy of Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie.
